Carpet and upholstery cleaner buying guide

Spot cleaners spray a cleaning solution, scrub, then suck the dirty water back into a separate tank, which is how they pull out stains that a normal vacuum cannot. They are the quickest answer to spills, pet accidents and sofa marks.

Tank size, hose length and the tools included decide how easy stairs and car seats will be. Pretreat old stains and let the formula sit for a few minutes before scrubbing.

Always test a hidden corner first, and let carpets dry fully with good airflow. Empty and rinse both tanks after every use to avoid smells.

Quick checklist before you buy:

• Tank size and hose length
• Included tools for stairs and sofas
• Stain pretreatment mode
• Noise level and weight

Care and maintenance for the Hoover CleanSlate XL Spot Cleaner

Rinse both tanks after every session, let the brush and hose dry, and store the machine with the lids off so smells do not build up. Use the recommended formula for the best results and avoid soaking the carpet, because drying time grows with every extra spray.

Things to consider

• Always test a hidden corner for colour fastness first
• Carpets can take several hours to dry fully
• Cleaning formula is a recurring cost
• The machine is heavier when both tanks are full
